I WAS BORN IN JEREZ DE LA FRONTERA (CADIZ – SPAIN), AND MY LINK TO FALLA IS THROUGH CARMEN DE FALLA, SISTER OF MANUEL.
MY FATHER, ALFONSO TORREJON, TOGETHER WITH JOSEFA BERENGUER (‘PEPITA’) WERE THE HANDS AND FEET OF CARMEN. DUE TO HER AGE SHE WAS IN NEED OF SUPPORT ALL DAY. MY EARLIER DAYS’ MEMORIES IS BEING MOST DAYs VISITING HER AT THE BERTEMATI’S PALACE IN JEREZ, WHERE SHE WAS RESIDING AND LOOKED AFTER BY THE NUNS OF ‘SERVICIO DOMESTICO’.
AT THE EARLY AGE I TOOK PIANO CLASSES, AND MY FATHER BOUGHT FOR ME, LITTLE BY LITTLE, A COLLECTION OF VINYLS …AND THE REST IS HISTORY. THIS IS HOW I CAME INTO CONTACT WITH THE RUSSIAN CULTURE (TCHAIKOVSKY, RIMSKY-KORSAKOV, ETC.).
NOWADAYS, THANKS TO THAT I LINKED MY LIFE TO RUSSIAN SOCIETY, AND am PARTLY RESIDING IN ST PETERSBURG, AMONGST OTHER PLACES.
For me, St. Petersburg has never been a mere tourist destination. It is a place of profound discovery, where my path as a doctor for children with rare diseases has intertwined with a sincere passion for ballet. Through the aesthetics of movement, scenery, and costume, I began my immersion into the world of Sergei Diaghilev—a visionary whose creative energy remains a vital source of inspiration in both my medical practice and my life.
The story of Manuel de Falla became personal through the heritage shared by Alfonso. Often, the immense stature of a genius obscures the lives of those closest to them; thus, it was a personal revelation for me to learn about Carmen—the composer’s sister. Understanding this intimate, human side transforms dry biographical facts into a heartfelt connection.
The upcoming festival marking the 150th anniversary of Manuel de Falla is a tribute to the great composer, his extraordinary gift, and the heritage of my husband’s family. It is a profound honor to be part of preserving these values. I believe that each of us, by passing this spark of knowledge to the next generation, becomes a guardian of traditions that endure for centuries
